A lot, the outdated criteria for entry of young men into the Catholic Church is like a advertisement for sexual misfits and deviants.
It makes sense, they cannot marry, have sex, have a normal family life, no hard work, great respect, have power, never do without, access to money, board of govenors for local school etc.
What normal heterosexual male would choose this life.
I could go on, but everyone knows this.

There must be absolutely thousands.
In fact my own personal theory is that many men become priests just so that they can gain the trust of people and then abuse their children.
There can be no other reason. Nobody with an IQ over 25 could possible believe in all that primitive, superstitious garbage which the bible talks about.
And as for those deluded individuals who have commented above that paedophiles exist in other spheres of life and not just in the priesthood, they are missing the point entirely.
The most truly shocking part of the recent paedophile priest cases which have been hitting the news is the fact that churches have gone out of their way to hide the abuse and instead of informing the police has merely moved the miscreant on to newer pastures so that they can abuse again.
If the church was to spend as much time eradicating the contagion of paedophilia within its own body as it does persecuting homosexuals then this problem would not exist.
But until then if you've got children then never, never, never leave them alone with christian priests!

For each that is jailed many are deceased........or undetected. There are good men as priests and these creatures taint the whole priesthood and Church. BUT in a way the church reaps what it sowed......in terms of sexual repression which is not natural. It does itself no further favour by shielding and protecting these perverted minds yet it still does and at the highest level.

Priest are jailed and let go by the GOVERNMENT (who punishes here on Earth).
A Senator (USA) made himself head seat for appropriation committee's to protect children on the Internet from sex crimes and was arrested ... and then let go by the government.
Public School Gym teachers are jailed and let go by the government.
John Mark Karr was handed to the Government by the Thailand Government on a silver platter ... and the Government let him go.
Real question is when is the Government going to do something about the problem ... or are they all guilty of the same crime (like the Senator)? I say "FIRE" the government because they're failing here.
Oh yeah, and then the govt locks up Paris the heriouss for a show of their might ... un- freaking -real!!!! Why are we screaming for Paris to be locked up over John Mark Karr??? It sounds like the Jesus & Barabas story to me.

Kellye B I think he was a Paedophile, and I did get my story right. I dont understand why people cover up for Paedophiles.
Most people cant stand them, I don't think Jesus would approve of them either, do you?

Why be so selective? The great majority of child abuse goes on within families, sometimes deliberately, sometimes as a by-product of divorce, when children are damaged by the break-up, by the loss of familiar security, by the loss of a parent they love.
Let's all keep our own house in order.

the media and others filled with hate would like you to think it's a lot, but it's actually less than 1% of priests. Child abuse is everywhere, not just in the church. And people who say it's because of the rules we have for priests are completey ignorant of priestly formation, and the stats back that up.

There are many people in the wider community who are involved in child abuse as well.
If you do care about children and about finding ways to prevent child abuse, it is not enough to simply 'blame' priests, or any one group.
Child abuse is a bigger issue than who wears backwards collars, it is about the future of our society.
Best wishes :-)

If you're talking about the guy that was on the news last night, he wasn't a catholic priest...he was a pastor of a different denomination. Please do your homework more fully before pointing fingers.
