I have a 1998 Polo 1.4 and have just reached 72,000 miles. There is nothing in the book about changing the cam belt. Does anyone know when it should be changed? (It's not diesel) I am presuming it should be changed!

If it`s never been changed then change it, it may appear not to be worn but rubber deteriorates naturally!

Should be done at between 50-60,000.

It`s better to be safe than the alternative.

As someone else said, Before it breaks! If you don't know then 60,000 OR 5 years would be a good choice. Remember to change any tensioner rollers at the same time as they have a life as well. If the belt fails it will either be at start-up when it's unsticking a cold engine (inconvenience but not too much damage) or on the motorway (More inconvenience and much damage!)

You are right where it would be smart to change the timing belt on any car. I assume your car has a timing belt and not a gear driven cam set-up.

GENERAL RULE If in doubt change it.Cheaper than engine repairs.
However, with most petrol engines, piston misses valves when belt breaks, therefore no damage, only inconvenience because they only break at the worst possible moment.
