Also using turbo timer to run the engine until the turbo cools down helps a lot after a hard drive into boost allow the engine to idle at least a minute. This also requires a car with a good cooling system you can walk away from idling with the alarm set. Frequent Mobil 1 oil changes your turbos should last 60,000 miles or till thee turbine shafts start to wear and oil get sucked into or blown into the inter-coolers Turbo car that start to smoke and different sound out of the turbos like a police siren Indicate turbo wear. I have almost never seen 100,000 miles from turbo engine or the turbos themselfs. I work on 300zx turbo cars and the individual turbos for garrett ball bearing shaft replacement units cost 2,100 a pr. stock HKS turbos cost about the the same. One 1.8 I volks wagon turbo rebuilt would set you back $350 to 400 to rebuild yours.

I own a 2000 Audi A4 1.8T (turbo) engine. The life of an turbo has much to do with the maintenance. The F*cken Audi (the company) recommended that I use conventional oil. Then somewhere around 2003 to 2005 they changed their mind and recommended I use synthetic oil. They still DIDN'T REQUIRE synthetic oil.

In my research - no matter what use - of synthetic is a MUST in a turbo engine. With proper maintenance, your turbo could last as long as the engine. Without proper maintenance, you'll be lucky if your turbo last 100K.

its gonna go when it goes, using only synthetic oil and vw g12 coolant will help for long life. I have 1.8T with 200000 plus miles on original turbo then again we have replaced them at 40k. Too early to tell with the 2.0FSI turbo but thus far has been fine. The key, proper fluids and stay on top of your maintenance and realize that its not a racecar

The turbo can last up to 150k if the engine is treated gently. However when the turbo goes, it must be replaced, there is no "getting-by"
