I took in a stray puppy. She appears to have mange. We have tried lots of different things and it looks a lot better but it isn't completely gone. We are a little strapped for cash so we cant afford a big vet bill but we want to do what we can for her. Any suggestions?

I'm afraid its a trip to the vets mange is contagious so make sure you handle your dog with gloves and wash any towels you use on 60 degrees as mange can be passed onto humans.
it depends on what sort of mange it is do you know as sarcoptic mange and demedex mange are two different sorts of mange that need two different types of treatment.
i work for the rspca and if we have dogs with mange they are treated with a lime wash and antibiotics,a scraping needs to be taken to determine what sort of mange it is and the treatment required.
if in the UK there is the pdsa and rspca who offer low cost treatment to people on low incomes, you need to be in receipt of a benefit good luck

I have done the same thing - taken in a stray with mange, two actually. I did take the dogs to the vet. The cure is to dip the dog every week for a month. I got the dip from my veterinarian. It probably cost about $10-$15. There is also dip available at pet stores, the farmers co-op and at on line pet stores. It is usually cheaper than buying from a veterinarian. You put a small amount in a tub (I used a plastic storage tote). It has a terrible smell, so do it outside. Wear rubber or vinyl gloves. Set the dog down in this mixture and sponge him/her down soaking her real good. I also used a large plastic cup to poor the mixture on the dog. Be careful about getting in the dogs eyes. However you do need to use a sponge or wash cloth and rub it around the dogs head and inside the ears. Dogs like to roll around after a bath, so I had a long leash and I tied the dog under the carport for a while until he was dry. He was on the cement and out of the grass and dirt this way. I did this on my own, because with two dogs needing treating, taking them to the vet each week for four weeks was more than I could afford. Actually, with one puppy the vet bill may not be too bad. I would suggest calling a vet and asking the cost to treat your puppy. The office visit, the cost for the treatment, such as dipping. I hope you have success in treating your puppy.

Equalon has worked well in many dogs. Its a drug made for horses but has been proven to treat mange off label in canines. You would need a prescription and the dog would need to be examined. Nothing fixes these things better than a vet.

You limit yourself when the one suggestion that could really help is not acceptable. Go to the vet. Mange can be very difficult to eliminate and some cases need the cure to be monitored by a vet.

Go to a pet shop and ask for advice, they will probably give you an antiseptic wash to put on the dog. If you can't afford a vet take the pup to a place where they might treat it for a small donation; I don't know where you are but in the UK there is the PDSA or the Wood Green Animal Shelter who offer treatment to people on low incomes for a donation. If you're in the states they must have similar charities who can help.

I am afraid that there is no substitute for a Vet. There is more than one type of mange, and one of those types is contagious to people.

Try dipping your pet in a dip for mange. One is called LYM dip.,but you must dip her about every two weeks until the mage is gone. Some types of mange is inherited from parents, and some type is contagious.

if you cannot afford to properly care for the dog, then you have no business keeping it. what about shots? neutering? injuries, sicknesses?
