Because some people cant accept that other people have different points of view on certain matters. So the easiest thing to do is insult or make fun out of the people you disagree with.

Religion and politics are probably 2 topics that will cause more controversy, produce more conflicts and kill more people than any other topic. Since this is a microcosm of the whole universe, the hatred and hostility is small compared to the world as a whole but that is how it all gets started . It is only a spark that gets the whiole fire going. It is in the little arguments, hostility, and hatred that stir the cauldron on this microcosm and the world stage as well .

Because you have those who believe in God and those who do not! Have you ever noticed how intense one gets when the conversation goes to religion?
I was always told never to discuss politics or religion! Well, there was a reason for that! People are passionate about their beliefs and that is why some go too far.
I can say that I have noticed that there are too many athiests trying to shoot down the Christians. I think if you do not believe in a particular subject, on Yahoo A&Q, then you should stay out of that section! Just my opinion!! It would sure make things nicer for everyone.

I agree. Also it is just as bad as the family section. Some people are asking good questions, then there are people that give stupid answers.

Because people have deeply held feelings in this secton and politics. In our society we say gentlemen never discuss religion and politics. So we get on here and let all that pent up emotion fly. For encouragement listen to ttb.org.

Well, we are talking about what many people consider the ultimate sources of morality, and how many clashing viewpoints can live together. That seems like a pretty good basis for fightin' words to me.

Extremes cause extremes.
Even political movements tend to have a lower share of fundamentalists than religions.

Jessicas silly answer actually made me laugh ^^
Ill say, the only thing anyone can say here is:
believers: youre going to hell!!
non-believers: youre dumb and brainless!
or something similar to this...
it doesnt go farther than this, doesnt get racist, doesnt get to a point where people start threatening each other with death, not on the main boards anyway. lord knows what happens in them emails.

Because we are all religous. Look at history, more human bloodshed has occured since the begining of man in the name of his/her god than for anything else. Since god is on our side then we are in the right to kick your as* if you don't believe in our god. So either believe or die because if your god was more powerful than mine, how could I conquer and enslave you and your peoples?
