Can anyone provide me with autobiographies or biographies of a classical or modern-day surgeon?

One of the best books on the subject is "The Century of the Surgeon" by Jurgen Thorwald.

Neurosurgeon Harvey Cushing wrote a bio of Sir Wm Osler. You might search for a biography on Halstead or Billroth. More recently, Wendy Moore wrote an interesting book on 18th century surgeon John Hunter. It's called The Knife Man. I enjoyed it.

And yes, someone mentioned Jurgen Thorvald's Century of the Surgeon. It was published in the early 1960's, I think.
