I have a friend who says that she can never marry a fascist person. She is a leftist ^^

What say you?

In other words my question is: would someones political stand make you hate them faster than their choice of religion?

They go hand in hand with all other ways to divide people, one is no worse than another

I don't know. I'd say they're about equal. I have a friend that we are friends because of our religion (otherwise we have nothing in common) and politics has actually threatened to ruin our friendship because he's a republican and supports the religious right (even though he's a pagan) and I'm a libertarian who can't understand why he's siding with the group of people who would have him burnt at the stake if they could. IMO, that goes beyond tolerance into stupidity and it drives me nuts. If he wasn't someone I'd known for all the years I've known him and if I didn't understand his need (albeit misguided IMO) to be accomodating to the point of giving up his own rights and freedoms to be tolerant toward everyone else (he hates rocking the boat) - I don't know that we'd still be friends. Of course it also drives me nuts that he seems to think tolerance does not extend to Muslims or Mexicans.

No. Religion has been around a lot longer than politics and has divided people since the beginning. Politicians often use religion as a divisive tool.

It's almost certainly a bigger division in the western world, where politics play a bigger role than religion in many people's lives.

And, politics is the other area of human thought where evidence doesn't exactly carry a premium.

Politics and religion both lead to a lot of fights and arguments it's pretty sad actually that people just can't act in a civilized way. Just because two people don't agree about certain things doesn't mean that they should disrespect each other.

No, because people don't say you'll suffer for eternity if you don't support Bush Not true with religion, which causes conflict and division with other people as well. I've never seen wars declared in the name of politics either.

I think politics and religion almost go hand-in-hand. If religion was really only about loving each other and treating others right, then it wouldn't divide at all - but religion is about justifying politics with God.

I don't hate anyone, but politics , a lot of times, has religious implications. I think politics is the biggest divider.

Absolutely not. Name all the hate groups you can that are grouped by political parties and then name all the hate groups you can grouped by religious affiliation.

Unfortunately, the two are becoming blurred....

Fundamentalists seem to have commandered the Republican party...and it will be interesting if any non-fundie ever gets their nomination...

I do not want to be a Democrat...but, am forced to because of the fundamentalist takeover of the Republican party ......

so goes.
