Imagine...

You're 25.

You've never been introduced to any form of religion.

You've never heard about spirits, gods, creators, evils, etc.

One day you're brought into a room, where representives are gathered around a gigantic table, one person representing each of the most wide-spread religions we have today. Dozens upon dozens are seated, and one by one they introduce you to their beliefs, and if they have any, to their holy writings and customs.

You have a religious belief right now (even if you're atheist). Explain why you would reject all of them except for the one you believe (or why you would choose to not choose).

If I'm understanding the premise correctly, I'd temporarily choose not to choose. I'd simply need more information. I don't buy real estate after hearing a one-day sales pitch, and in the same way, I'd want to do further research into a religion before choosing one. What I would want are objective sources, not just a presentation from a follower of a certain religion. Yes, it's very important to hear from practitioners of a religion, and I don't discount that, but I also value objective information and research. And hypothetical questions aside, in reality, I'm religious.

well i for sure wouldnt choose christianity. i think true christians are physco. I dont know how anyone can believe that god could impregant the virgin mary, and give her a baby when shes never had sex. And supposidly Mary has a husband, but they never have had sex???
And god created a flood and made a dude named noah make a boat and then take 2 of everything some where else becuase the world was evil and god wanted to flood it. Well what about now? isnt the world a lot worse then it was a long time ago?
And then 10 plagues. ahhaha thats a joke.
In the bible it says that god had a person strike his had over a river, and then it turned into blood. hahaha. i cant even say that with out laughing. its like believing a harry potter movie is real and that their magic is real. and do you notice that if you ever ask a catholic to really explain somthing to you, then they work their way around the question and never actually answer it.
And how is it possible that god has always been here. becuase that just cant happen. And yeah.. its just crazy.

but i think i would choose to be atheist. i've read up on a lot of different religions and none of them could convince me to believe in it.

I am multi-pantheon in my beliefs. I believe there is truth in every religion.
I lean towards eastern religious standards of Karma, the belief that what you put out there comes back to you.
I accept all deities.
I place Hecate as my #1 Goddess, triple goddess.
I place Jehovah, I AM, as my #1 God, since he instructs his subjects/followers as follows: "I am a jealous god and therefore you shall put no other gods BEFORE me."
That's cool.
Buddha is really cool and so is Jesus Christ. If you look at the New Testament, a whole lot of eastern religion and philosophy is in JC's parables. Odin and Freeja are my heritage god and goddess. Gaia is my mother earth.

I don't get too caught up with a particular religion. I am more into what is truth to me, what seems right in my intuition.
I am very happy with my beliefs and I accept and love everyone else according to their actions towards me and my family. If they are negative and harmful, I am going to protect same. I don't feel compelled to convince someone to believe the way I do.
Whenever Jehovah's Witnesses or Mormons come to my door, I tell them I am not interested in converting to "their way" of believing, but "Goddess bless you!" and I close the door. Let them find their own path. I found mine.

I would choose The Buddha. This is a gentle Religion that worships no Original Principle and posits a peaceful path to liberation through contemplation and meditation.

Amazing ...
One if the few open-minded members i read their Qs here..
Really deserve to think about a resonable way to accept or refuse those large number of concepts and beliefs..
Ok , lets begin thinking loudly...
I'm gonna choose my religion through the following filters::
1- Should respect my humanity , my rational and emotional intelligence....
Respect my humanity through not asking me for be single all life long without a private relation with a male " Husband" not a boyfriend...
Through not asking me to through my self or my son in the river to flood , or kill someone who don't believe in that religion as a sacrifice...
Respect my rational intelligence by telling me rational things... if u told me that the sun is the creator and the cause of life , i'll tell u it's composed of hydrogen and other gases , it's heat and light are due to its nuclear power...How did it creat itself?!!
if u told me that jesus had died for saving us , so tell me , is that logical for a supposed son of God to die for those people who don't even remember him except in christmass?!! they don't remember him while having sex with more than one partener , with his friend's wife , with his daughter?!!!!
Respect my emotional intellegece - as a female- i'll search for a religion that respects me , a religion that i know i'll be held accountable for my deeds , not for my beauty or how many boyfriends i have , a religion with a concept that the female is a human , has the right to live and be..
2-Should give me a clear answer about Who Is The Creator .?!! What's the scientific proof ... meaning that scinece is not contradictory to that religion....
Of course don't give me a piece of stone or wood and tell me this is the creator.... I Will Not Believe ...
3-Should respect love , be neutral and in harmony with the nature around us...
4-It's basics should be constant but flexible...i mean , its basics or pillars are constant , not changed but flexible to fit with every day life ,, travelling , sleeping all day and working all night...being pregnant or had labour...etc
5- the relation between me and ny God should be DIRECT , no money is paid for some one to tell God to come closer or no hand is kissed ....

well, i would look into my back ground and heritage and find out first if it went along with what beliefs the nation i came from had. if it was that one, i would go with it. if not, i would stop and think on it weather i wanted to take on the belief or not. i would have to have time to study it and make an informed decision. if i was told i had to make a decision right there, i would reject it all together. any organization, religion, belief or concept i were to delve into would have to go along with my own personality, concepts and beliefs i have on myself. it would have to compliment that. and any religion that i was invited to join would not push it on me and would give me the info, step back, and let me make the next move.

Atheism isn't a religion. But knowing what I know about science, I would reject all of them, because they strike me as cony. I don't know a whole lot about science, but it doesn't take a lot of knowledge to know these religions couldn't possibly be true.

I would ask them

Why is what I believe currently "wrong"?

What makes your belief system better or more valid than any of the others?

What proof can you offer in support of your answer?

Why believe what another person believes. It takes experiences and education to make the correct decision. I am not going to believe someone who tells me to worship someone because they do. Look at Hitler, David Koresh, etc...

That would be a question I could not answer. The one thing that I think would help, would be I lean to the side of kindness and understanding.
