While it is not exact, basically, the distance that a person runs is linearly correlated to the number of calories they burn. That is, the number of calories burned in 1 hour is half as much as the number of calories burned in 2 hours and so forth.

By your estimate of 100 calories per mile, which is a decent one for an average person, the number of calories burned by a runner that completes a marathon (26.2 miles) would be about 2,620 (26.2 miles x 100 calories/mile). That's pretty close to what my calorie counting watch told me at the end of my marathon a couple of weeks ago. And since I lost about 5 lbs during that race (not including sweat), it sounds about right..

Well, I don't know if you just count your running distance or time. The deal is that the longer you run, the longer the effects of running continue in your body AFTER your run is over. In other words, your body continues to burn calories at an elevated rate even after you've showered and dressed.
