We have tall people in our family so I was thinking of getting 2 twin XL mattresses but they are hard to find, and I'd like to get good quality for a reasonable price. (In other words, they should last 5 years at least).
But now, I am thinking a queen sized bed might be a better idea because they're readily available, and so is the bedding.

Our bedrooms are not too big.

If you have one room to dedicate to guests, 2 twins is a great way to go. One nightstand between them could serve both beds. Depending on how often you have guests, even inexpensive mattresses should hold up well.

You can accommodate two people comfortably who may not want to share a bed.

I have a really small guest bedroom and went with a queen because everyone that visits is tall. There are only two bedside tables for furniture in there, but no one ever complains about the bed being too small. But I am thinking about raising the bar in the closet and putting a lowboy for clothing storage in there. I also put in a queen sized futon in the library which looks like a couch/day bed that the children love to sleep on. The couch design saves space when it is not open in use.

It sounds like you should get a Full sized bed. It's bigger than a twin, but smaller than a queen. I seem to find a lot of options for bedding for a full when I'm looking for bedding for my queen! Using this size will give you more room to put other things in the room.

Full is a good size for guests. They're typically cheaper than queen size things, but not really that much smaller. A couple of inches.

I have a queen for our spare bedroom it is big but doesn't fill up the room. the best is queen linens are always on sale and easily available. I am 6foot and fit fine most tall people are used to their feet sticking out when they travel.

queen size is a pretty big bed and put pillows right up at the top of bed along with the sheets, so to accomodate the tall members;;;

Twin or full size... or two twins to be put together when a couple comes over but can be used separately by two cousins or friends that have come over.
