Little RFID devices could be installed in all cars for a few cents each. Scanners could be sold to police and other people with legitimate uses for less than $100. VIN numbers and engine numbers could also be on the chip.
This would remove a hassle for auto owners and make life safer and easier for policemen.
The money for annual license plate fees would still be collected but no plates or decals would need be mailed except for people that wanted "vanity plates".

I agree with you. We would be able to have our cars look good with out having to have the big ugly plate on the front and rear of our cars. Drilling holes in the front where holes should not be. Everything is electronic these days so I would guess that in about 5 to 6 years we maybe on a system that has an electronic chip ID per car. I know the California law departments are looking to past a law to have laser kill switches in cars. The bill requires that cars sold in the state after 2004 have the system, and cars registered after 2007 be retrofitted if neccessary.

An old question but more than valid to re-question today.
Registration and plates are just an excuse for gov to collect fees and property taxes. We trust mfgs to maintain VIN numbers but not to put a permanent visible number on a bumper - that would usurp states power to control and justify excessive taxes. As for theft, plates can be removed and tampered with. RFid would be tougher for the street criminal to tamper with and could possibly disable the car from cranking - tying a working RFID in with the computer system. If you are trying to identify the owner and driver and not just the car, again VIN number via RFId can be assigned or linked with the owners Driver License number when purchased. Sell the car - remove the DL link. All could be done online - using either mfg or state database.

How could it be "easier" for policemen? How are they going to identify the car that just sped past them at 30 over the speed limit?

License plate is a visible identification tool needed by law enforcement to track a vehicle for any crimes or to investigate it.

License plates are used by the DMV to make sure your vehicle is properly registered.

YES< YES< YES!

Think about it...

"ya officer they stolled my 1998 toyota camry, well that should be easiy to find, there's only 9,999,990 of those still on the road"
or
"the guy who abducted that little girl was in a ford f150, that should narrow down the search for her, any other info on it, yeah it was white. That should narrow it down, there can't be more than 10,000 of those in this city alone".

GET A CLUE NOT A CHIP!
