I want to tone up my hips, thighs and butt, but I don't want to lose my butt in the process. I have a pretty good sized butt, not quite JLo, but I've really got some meat back there. What I have been doing is walking a really hilly part of my neighborhood for about 30 minutes then running the flat areas for about 10. I just started this a few days ago and haven't been able to build up past 10 minutes of running. I know running the hilly part would be best, but I am not conditioned enough for that yet. Will this routine help target the areas I mentioned without shrinking my butt? Also, will it get rid of the thin layer of flab that covers my stomach, or will I need to do crunches for that? I don't have rolls, just some jiggle that I want gone. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi: First of all you are well on your way to having a nice butt. You have already done the hardest thing, get outside and do something. Running and walking will absolutly get your thighs and butt in shape. It will also help you tone your upper body because you are also using those muscles when you run. Remember, you are first going to lose weight where it is most accumulated. It is going to take some time for your body to adapt to the stress you are putting on it. That is why you get tired after several minutes of running. As time goes on you will notice that you can run longer, exercise longer. You will feel better and even sleep better.

And yes, you will start to loose weight and "tighten up" your legs, thighs and butt. Do not worry, you will not lose your butt. It will only become much firmer and toner. As you get more used to running you can try this. You know that big hill by your house? Start at the bottom of the hill and jog to the top. When you get to the top turn around and walk down to the point where you started. Repeat what you just did. You do not have to go fast at all. Try to do this at the beginning for about ten minutes. As time goes on you can increase the time that you spend doing this. What you will notice is that you are working your muscles going up and down the hill. You may want to do this type of workout only one day a week for now. Later you can increase it to two days a week.

I also suggest that you go to your local bookstore and check out the fitness magizines. You will find alot of valuable information there. You must remember that fitness is a lifetime choice. You have to make it a priority, like brushing your teeth. As time goes on you will notice that people are staring at you. They won't be staring because they think you are weird. They will be staring because you a** looks hella good. Take care.
