How do I stop my kittens from doing the inevitable?

I have 2 kittens brother and sister, just over 5 mnths old. The female has just come into heat but the vet says I cant have them neutered until they are 6 mnths old which is 2 wks away. I do I stop them mating without having toshut them up in seperate rooms for 2 wks whihc isn't practical. Do male kittens come into heat later than females or does it vary?

If your vet can't neuter for 2 weeks don't worry about it if she getscaught in the next two weeks when he neuters the whole lot is taken away and she will be fine afterwards, i am sure your tom of 5 months isn't going to impregnate her he is too young the girls normally mature before the boy's but watch her because she will do anything and everything to get out of the house and if she is calling it's not just to your tom cat it will be to all the other tom cats outside your house and they will hear her aswell as smell her so all you have to do is leave a window or a door a touch open and she will be off and i can guarantee she will come back pregnant..Hang on for another two weeks and get her done she will be fine with your tom cat honest...

Hmmmm.. it's a dilemna.. Unless you've seen them mate, then probably the boy isn't mature enough to get her pregnant. Yes, males generally mature slower than females. Just like people (Look at any picture of a 6th grade class). Try calling your friends and family and ask if any of them will be willing to keep one of the kittens for you for 2 or 3 weeks. Call around to SPCAs and other vets. Many places will now desex from 4 months or older, but your vet is one of the stubborn (6 months no earliler) ones, which is not uncommon. In your case I'd say that desesexing shouldn't wait till the full 6 months. Males can become firtle by that age, and females can occasionally get preggo as early as 4 months. That's the equivalent of a 9 year old girl getting her period and then getting pregnant! NOT GOOD!!

We adopted one of our cats from our vet when he was 4 months old, and he had already been fixed! (I'm not sure exactly how old he was when he was fixed, but it was probably pretty young since they fixed him hoping someone would adopt him, but they had been trying to get him adopted for a long time -- no one wanted him since was solid black!) The vet did admit that they fixed him a little younger than they normally they do so it might stunt his growth, but otherwise he should be fine. However, he has grown up into a huge monster cat, so if that stunted his growth, I'd hate to see how big he would have been if they hadn't fixed him! lol

By the way, male cats don't come into heat. When a female cat is in heat, it has to do with their cycle ... Even if your male cat is too young to actually breed, his hormones are probably still active enough that he will try! (I'm not sure how old male cats are before they can breed...)

No, they'll mate if they get around each other. Males do not go into heat, but he will know that the female is. I had my cat fixed at 4 mo, so I don't know what your vet is talking about. At 6 mo they can already go in heat and it is more beneficial health-wise to have them fixed before the first cycle. It also reduces bleeding during the procedure.

Edit: if they do mate, and she's pregnant when she goes to get fixed, they'll just take the babies (as in a kitty abortion)

Firstly male cats dont come into heat, male cats mature later than females so you should be ok, go to the vet and ask him for some ovarid, this will stop your cat from calling (coming into heat). Get them spayed ASAP as if they do breed you will end up with deformed kittens a thing I am sure you do not want

Some vets aren't comfortable with early spay or neuter but most will now do it. You should call around and find a vet that will do it now. My kitten was spayed at 10 weeks old (by the breeder before I got her) and she hasn't had any problems.

Males don't have a heat cycle they become more active around 12/18 months they don't mature as much as females do. Females mature around 6 months maybe you could ask your vet for a pill just in case they mate while you are not aware otherwise you could maybe buy a cattery so it's not so hard for you.

Male cats don't come into heat. Coming into heat is basically an animal menstruating, and is also when they're at their most sexually needy. Male animals respond to the smell, and this can happen at any age. It's inadvisable to have animals neutered at a very young age, as they need hormonal levels to be normal to enable them to develop normally. It's only two weeks, and all you need is one door to separate them while you're out - surely you can manage one door? Your best bet is to shut one in the bathroom (WITH food and water) as it's less likely to damage anything, and it's easier to clean up. Don't be such a defeatist - it's so easy when you think about it.

It varies. You definitely have to keep them separated. But by 5 1/2 months your vet should be able to do it. Mine does but I guess every vet is different. Mine won't do it under 5 1/2.

Your vet is wrong! Cats can be spayed and neutered at 2.5 pounds, which corresponds roughly to 2.5 months. I think you need a second opinion, you don't want a pregnant 6 month old cat!
