I'm sure that as long as there's been religion some people haven't believed in it. For much of history they'd have suffered terrible fates if they said so, though.

There are a couple of loony websites out there that reckon Satan is the author of atheism and that all atheists are possesed by the devil. In which case he is answering your question now.

As long as there has been humans and religion there have been those who see the foolishness of it.

We are not born believers, quite the opposite. It is societal influence that makes some people crack and start to follow along the religious road. Others simply know no better.

A few just know intuitively that god is a crock.
