By just running your plates is an officer able to tell that you haven't registered your car? Or if you get pulled over and he sees your paperwork you're busted? I mean, if you have current tags, however the car is not currently registered (as in you just got a current year sticker from someone off the street), what's the consequence if a cop runs your plates??

OK... if you take the plates off a car and put them on another here are the crimes:

Attaching License Plates Not Assigned (usually a criminal offense)

Operating an Unregistered Motor Vehicle (Some states is also a criminal offense).

And yes, when we run the tag it shows the vehicle the plate is assigned to.. if it does not match, that is Probable Cause for a stop.

Doesn't matter what the sticker says. They can run the plates and see they are not valid. Or, they will see they belong on a Nissan Ultima but they are attached to a Dodge Neon. In either case, you are busted.

Patrol cars around here all have laptop computers onboard and can search your plates in seconds.

If you're caught, you could face jail time. This is a serious offense and at a minimum your car will be impounded (which will cost mucho cash) and you will get cited (again mucho cash). If you have any issues with your record, this could escalate into a fraud case in a hurry.

It's cheaper to really register the car than to fake it. Just do the right thing, less mess to cover up later.

The computer will tell him its expired. He'll pull you over and get to the bottom of it. In some instances, its a felony to have another registration sticker on your plates. Just pay the $200.00 or so.

They will wonder where you got the sticker. If you are caught, you will probably have to pay a fine and register your car within 30 days. That is IF you get caught.

Think about it, if the car is registered under both names, then both names will show up on the registration. Same as the deed on a house if there is joint ownership.

Generally they impound the vehical. This happened to a friend of mine. We were left somewhere in RI and had to get someone to pick us up. You also run the risk of getting arrested for taking someone elses registration.

Depends on your "knowledge" of the tags..."knowing" they are fraudulent and allowing them to remain on your vehicle is normally a misdemeanor...knowingly "placing" a fraudulent sticker on your vehicle and allowing it to remain is normally a felony..!! Either way your looking at jail time..!!
