I've looked on Amazon.com and ordered one, but I want to know if there is an "Encyclopedia" or the like that has illustrations and summaries of most common plants in the United States.

Try a Library... that's a Librarian's job!

However, most Encyclopedias and reference books can't be checked out, so you'd have to sit there to identify the plants... or ask for titles and buy them on Amazon!

There are TONS of books like that. I doubt there is one deifinitve one since there re millions of plants. If you;'re looking for a certain thing it would help narrow it down. Like if you want herbs there is Culpepper's Color Herbal. Narrowing it down is the only thing I can think of that might give you what you want.
