Depends on which version you've got. US and Japanese version have RSX chip which deals with PS2 games almost perfectly. Euroversion doesn't have that chip, so not all of PS2 games will run on your PS3. Euroversion uses software simulation instead.

It will be compatible with some games but not all of them. And the number isn't small either, Sony admits that 200 PS2 games will not work with the PS3. You might also have to have gotten the 600$ version instead of the cheaper one.

ok, like wow the dude above me is so completely incorrect. placed it like this. in case you have the 40GB or new 80GB middle, it won't play PS2 video games because of the fact they took the Emotion Engine CPU out the PS3, it replaced into costing too lots to place into the gadget and that they've been dropping money apparently. verify and replace your question, does your PS3 have 2 USB ports, if so that they you could no longer. If it has 4 it would play. additionally in case your gadget would not have the cardboard Readers additionally then you definitely can know for a fact you could no longer play PS2 video games.

With firmware version 1.8 the PS3 will:

-PLAY and upscale PS1 games to HD (1080p)
-PLAY and upscale PS2 games to HD (1080p)

The European version of the PS3 is the one that doesn't play SOME games because European units shipped without the CPU/rasterizer combination chip (EE+GS) which the US and Japanese version DO HAVE.

So to answer your question... YES, THE PS3 WILL PLAY PS2 and PS1 games as long as you don't own the European version.

Hope this helps!!
