wow, I'm getting some really great responses. Some of them I'm familiar with and some I'm not. I'm making a list of apologists I can recommend to the RCIA classes that I help teach, as many of the people like to read and study things privately as well.

nondescript - I'll be praying for you. And I hope you can find some questions that you are qualified to answer.

John Martignoni and the folks at the Bible Christian Society are quite good. They have some nice mp3s and pamphlets.

Augustine, Justin Martyr, Aquinas, de Sales, Chesterton, John Paul II ...

Contemporary apologists? Keating has been mentioned, and I would add Patrick Madrid, Thomas Howard (another convert, like Hahn -- read his "On Being Catholic", it's exquisite), and Mark Shea. Fr. John Corapi, while not strictly considered an apologist, does have a gift for explaining the faith in Biblical terms and pulls no punches.

Is there such a thing as a good Catholic apologist?

Religion is just organized superstition, and it is causing much of the grief we see in the world. Anything that tries to rationalize away all of the obvious faults with religion isn't something I would call "good".
