@ people thinking it's the devil. The serpent, a Canaanite symbol of life, health, and fecundity, indicates a fertility theme of the whole narrative. The “tree of life” is obviously another prominent metaphor for fertility. The tree as well as the serpent are both symbols of the goddess Asherah. A Canaanite goddess which the Israelite priests warn people not to worship throughout the OT. There is even an etymological connection between the Hebrew name Eve, hawwah, and the name Asherah. In addition, there is also a similarity between the name hawwah and the Aramaic word hewya’ for serpent. The snake isn't the devil, it's Asherah.

I'd go backpacking everyday to my work place and there are lots of talking snakes there. I pray and ask God to give me wisdom and grace to handle them and I will be the head and not the tail. God bless. Oliveoil

We avoid snakes because we are so busy talking to the trees. And we do not take apples.
