What does the Bible say about the solar system..now they have evidence of an ocean on Mars 2 billion years ago...how do Christians explain that? I am a Christian, but do not know how to answer this question...I believe in God and do not believe that the earth has been around that long...how do we know how long the solar system has been around?

Red shirt gives us an indication of how fast the planets are running away from us and math helps with determining their distance.

I know that some say the Bible does not address dinosaurs, but it doesn;t even discuss Chinese people!

This is done by radiometric dating of rocks formed when the solar system formed.

Different radioactive materials decay to other materials at different rates For example if you start with sample of Uranium 235, half of it will decay to lead in about 704 million years.

So by looking at a sample of uranium and finding the ratio of lead to U235 it is possible to work out when that sample was formed.

The biblical version of creation has the Earth existing before the land or the oceans. It has light before there are any light sources. Day and night before the sun exists. The bible should NOT be read literally because a literal interpretation is disproved by science.

In Genesis, the Bible speaks of the earth and its atmosphere. He created stars, and the moon, and the sun for the earth. That is the frame of reference. Not the entire universe. There is no mention of when the universe was created, although I believe that it existed before earth. How long, I don't know.

Genesis talks about the sun, the moon and the earth but no other planets.
Remember that a day in Genesis means a "God day" and the bible says that God transends time so a God day can mean a billion years.
The Hebrew word for day also means epoch.

Not only the solar system, but the universe as well.

The most compelling verse is the one that says, "There are children in other lands that need to hear my voice."

Psalm 19:1 says that "the heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament shows His handiwork." Everything that God has made, be it you and me, or wildlife, or angels, or stars and planets, have been created for His glory. When I see a breathtaking view of the Milky Way or peer at Saturn through a telescope, I am amazed at the wonders of God!

David wrote in Psalm 8:3, "When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained." When we see the vast number of stars, then read that scientists have discovered thousands upon thousands of galaxies, each containing millions of stars, we should be stand in reverent fear of a God so immense to make all that and call it the work of His fingers! Furthermore, Psalm 147:4 tells us that "He counts the number of the stars, He calls them all by name." It is impossible for mankind to know how many stars there are, not to mention the *name* of every star!

Girl, wrong book! Bible is NOT for historical or scientific research. May be shipbuilding or star based navigation but that's it :-()

No. God didn't write the Bible. Men did, and their concept of the cosmos was extremely primitive and folkloric, so that's what you get in the Bible.

If you can't answer that question within your "Christian framework", then maybe it's time to redesign the framework. Maybe you are wrong about how long everything has been around.
