It would all depend on what breed and size you are thinking about. but here are some good breed to conceider in all sizes.
small: Shitz szu, Lapso, Bichons, Pugs.
NOTE: Stay away from the terriers they tend to be hyper and an handful.
MEDIUM: Golden Retreivers, Labs, They love children and are easily trained. They are not to hyper and will grow up to defend you and your children with their life, but also be a friendly member of the house.
LARGE: St Bernards, Grate Danes are like mentioned by someone else, very good with kids.
Mix Breeds are also an option, if you are looking for calm dogs, stay away from the terriers and most of the hounds. The breeds that are found in the non-sporting cathagory tend to be calmer.
Hope this helps

A puppy + a two year old is a very bad combination. Puppies nip, jump up and knock toddlers over and a toddler's shrill voice and unsteady movements scare a puppy. A scared dog will bite.
My advice would be to wait until your child is old enough (around 5), to understand when you tell him/her how to gently treat a puppy and respect it's "down time".
If you're not willing to do that, I'd suggest getting a large breed adult dog from a rescue that has tested the dog with small children.

an adult dog is better becouse it has already matured and most likaly potty traind already, It dosn't have to be really old I'd think 1 or 2 is an apropreait age to get a dog. Look into some breeds and keep your needs in mind if you don't find anything in particular then think about rescueing one! : )
Labs- No, they are the #1 most likaly to attack a person, they chew, they are good dogs for famialies that are very active!
GSP- Keep them busy and they are happy, a bit rough playing sometimes, great with kids!!
St. Bernard- Great with kids, good gaurdians, A LOT of slobber lol
not every dog is perfect but they are as close to a famialies needs as the famialy is to theres!
Don't get one becouse they are cute!!!!!! Oh and JRT's are NOT a good idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hyper, attack small animals, very cute but can easly mastake a crying bybe for easy pry!!!!
A puppy isn't a very good idea!! an adult is a better choice!!
Great danes- Huge, slobery, plays REALLY ROUGH!!!, good with older kids
Boxer- Very active, good with kids, plays very rough!
Golden Retreiver- puppies for life! Never really mature!!! Play REALLY Rough!!!!
Small breeds- more energy
I suggest finding YOUR needs and finding a breed that fits your famialy then seeing what the DOGS needs are and make sure you can comply with them!!
Also consider waiting a year or so to make sure the kid won't hurt it, let it take care of a toy puppy for a little bit and see how things work out!
Collies are a good choice but they do need room to run on!! easy to train!!, EXELENT with kids!!

I personally don't think any puppy is good to get for a 2 yr old. A 2 yr old could easily hurt a puppy without meaning to. An older, bigger dog would probably work out much better. You could then teach the 2 yr old to treat animals in a kind way.

Honestly, I'd wait a few years till your toddler is a bit older and better at listening to direction about how to behave around a dog. A small toy dog can be injured by a rough toddler and a large one may be too rough to play with your child at this age.
When the time comes, the traditional family dogs - golden retrievers and labs make great pets for children. They are easy to train, people-oriented and affectionate and can handle rough play from kids. If you can adopt an adult dog from a shelter that has successfully lived with kids before, that is the absolute best solution. Good luck.

Lab or Golden Retriever, Collie breeds... and SUPERVISE!!! Never leave a puppy and a 2 year old alone!!
Please do not get a Jack Russell or any other terrier breed. They are extremely smart but also very hiper, and need a lot of attention and training. Also play a little too rough for a small child.

A golden or other large gentle breed. A clumber spaniel would be perfect if you can find one.
Stay away from hyper breeds like boxers, bostons, jack russells, pekes, shelties, yorkies, poms, etc.
Don't get a fighting breed or a bulldog breed. It's not worth the risk to the child.
And ignore people who say dogs and kids don't mix. Of course they do. You just have to find a calm, submissive dog that isn't fearful. And don't let the child abuse it.

you may heavily heed others that have cautioned you to attend some extra years until now getting a canine. No canine could be subjected to a baby/toddler abusing it, that's largely what a baby "pulling it and roughing it" is. it fairly is inquiring for undertaking for the two your toddler and the canine. the two canine and baby could basic procedures to act around one yet another and to grasp one yet another. once you daughter is a sprint older she will extra suitable understand those surprising teachings. If raised jointly suitable there is not any extra suitable friendship. in no way go away ANY canine on my own unsupervised with a small baby, even for a minute, no remember how good the canine is with a baby. it fairly is how extreme injuries take place, toddlers are killed and canines euthanised as risky. frequently that's the fault of the owner for permitting it to take place. you're extra suitable once you youngster is sufficiently previous to earnings, with a particularly older canine from a committed and respected breed rescue, the place the canine has been carefull and entirely assessed as acceptable. surely do no longer choose for a Border Collie with youthful toddlers. they could be miraculous yet too many are too concentrated on herding and youthful toddlers become the concentration of that intuition, no longer good. # proprietor/coach/Breeder of Border Collies for over 30 years.

Unfortunately, most puppies are quite hyper by nature of their age. 2 years old is rather young for a dog...some of the calmer varieties that are good with children are Labrador Retrievers, hound dogs such as beagles (very patient dogs), collies, and mountain dogs like St. Bernards and Great Pyreness. Mountain dogs are really patient and calm and good with kids, but they are very large.
