I want to be a pilot in the Navy and am currently going through the application process. In some of my research I have read they assign you your career path at the end of OCS. Does this mean that even though I'm accepted as Pilot I could end up doing something else? I understand that this may be the case due to physical restraints and what not but I am confident I can pass those. I am just worried that I go through OCS and at the end they tell me they don't need pilots.

It can happen. Look at WWII. In 1944 a large number of officer candidates were classified as superfluous and turned into infantry replacements. Having said that, it isn't likely. Anyone is far more likely to wash out of pilot training and and be reclassified that way. By the way, it's usually not failure to pass the physical. Those people get weeded out far earlier. Can you fly? Fly formation? Aerobatic? Navigate to a target and find your carrier after the strike? Trap (means land on a carrier)? At night? In a storm?

Things may have changed since I took it...

Ask your officer recruiter about the Aviation Officer Candidate School program...its different than OCS, only Marines and Navy offered it... if they still do, but if you pass the tests through training you are either a pilot or navigator otherwise you are out...Last time I checked it did not have the benefits of regular OCS (school sponsorship etc.), but at least you are guaranteed a pilot or aviator instead of a sub-mariner or surface warfare.

Special Note:

Purchase a practice aviation aptitude test for military service book at barnes and noble bookstore or amazon.com etc. Very similar to the real test with very similar questions, but the actual test is on a computer. Be sure it is the AVIATION Aptitude Test! Different than the regular OCS test book.

Be sure before you start to check that the power cord is plugged in and not on battery back-up...I lost two minutes during the math session ouch!

The Aviation Aptitude test score is very important later on when you have options to choose which course of aviation you want to go to depending on the needs of the Navy.

Best of Luck to you! May you be blessed with the best job in the world!

I know this isn't going to be very deep and I almost feel silly for saying it but "Ho Problems" by JT Money and "Housewife" by Dr. Dre. I don't listen to rap anymore, but at the time I did a lot. There was a girl I was really falling for but she liked to run around and didn't really want to be with me and only me. I was taking it really hard until i heard those lyrics and realize that ho problems ain't no problem and that I can't make a ho a housewife. Haha, we're friends now. Those songs helped me deal though and changed the way I approached relationships.

If you have it in black in white that you are to attend flight school upon the completion of ocs you'll be ok. If its not in your contract, then don't coun't on going. There's always the possibilty of a medically banning cenario. I'm just surprised cause flight spots are ussually only given to acadamy grads. and a select few rotc guys. If you've got one, and have it in writing don't pass it up. In the army they won't assigne you a mos untill the end basic training, befor ocs, and you'll ussually never get what you want, unless you want somthing in combat arms.

While this forum may be informative for many, it is primarily an entertainment venue. I'm not comfortable with officers in our military who don't know how to find rock solid, legitimate answers to important questions. If you're ever commissioned, your superiors (and your subordinates) won't like it either.

you get accepted to OCS, but of you are found NPQd or otherwise ineligible to go Aviation, you go where they send you, which is most likely SWO if you are young enough and Supply or IWO/INTEL if you are too old for URL.

yes, they can and will send you elsewhere if they can't give you an Aviation slot.

Yes they can, and due to the parameters around being a pilot, probably will.
