Depends on the style. I wouldn't have them doing "Hung Gar" until 16 (and only if fully grown) Wing Chun might be able to be done younger. The Sifu should have suggestions. Northern styles should be easier at younger ages. Wu Shu is also excellent for much younger kids, and they can move to a Kung Fu school when they get older, and the Wu Shu experience will be good for them.

As a practitioner of Karate, we've had students come in as young as 3, but honestly they're a bit of an annoyance, they tend to mess around quite a bit, and not concentrate. I mean, what can you expect, they're 3. I started when I was 5 or 6, but honestly, I wish I wouldn't have started until the range of 8-10. It's easier to learn the basics at an age like that. Lately the Dojo here has instituted a policy of not allowing anyone under 5 - We still have young kids (5 and up) who mess around, don't listen, etc. but they're easier to deal with at that age. I'm not a practitioner of Kung-Fu, and don't know any regulations they might have themselves. And many individual dojos have their own polices, some including age. But if I were you, I wouldn't start looking too seriously until 7-8 or later.

My son is a 4th degree martial arts instructor---his school will NOT take children any younger then 4 because they lack the concentration at earlier ages.... He has only accepted a FEW at 4 because each new child goes through an INTRODUCTORY LESSON PERIOD.... (3 lessons)... if the child does NOT seem to be able to have the concentration needed at that time, rather then soak a parent for lessons that the child will NOT learn from till he is more able to concentrate (maybe by the time he is 5)....my son will let the parent to bring their child back in 6 months to a year---so it varies with each child but he will NOT start any child younger then 4. and he's been teaching Martial art for almost 16 YEARS now...

It really depends on how disciplined your kids are. Some are able to focus at age 3, others need to wait until they are 6.

It would all depend on the Sifu and your child. However, most do not take children unless they are around 5. My instructor (Sil Lum Gung Fu) would not take kids until they were 7 years old. It would be best to find a Sifu in your area and ask them.

There's no point in having your kids start martial arts until they're 8 or 9 because before that, their reflexes are still developing and there's really no point in them learning it because they won't be able to use it.

P.S. How could you possibly spell kung fu wrong?
