I've had moderate allergies for years -- just sneezing and an itchy/runny nose (no congestion or more serious symptoms). I take Benadryl at night because it helps the symptoms and helps me sleep, but I'm looking for something effective that I can take during the day.

I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow and was thinking of requesting a prescription, but I wanted to see what has worked well (and with the fewest side effects) for others. I was thinking about trying Astelin because it's advertised as being good for environmental irritants (and I know I'm allergic to some perfumes) but I've also heard it can have some pretty serious side effects.

Suggestions from personal experience please. Thanks!

for daytime anti-allergant "loratadine" or "levocetrizine": is the best choice for most of the people. for drivers or who work in keen jobs better to use "fexofenadine" .And who hav sleep disturbance with allergy , they can use hydroxyzine. thanks and good wishes for all.

Over the counter-I use Chlortrimeton. It has a different antihistimine than the usual OTC drugs. The main ingredient is Chlorpheniramine maleate. It works for 12 hours and does not make me drowsy. It's a little more expensive, but I find that it works best.

The prescription that I use and love the most is Flonase or some generic form if it.

Also, keeping a consistent dose of medication in your body is the best defense. For example, when I was on a prescription pill, the doctor told me that it would not start to work effectively until I had taken the pills consistently for about a week.

Good luck!

I use Zytrec and Flonase. Both work well together. I'm also Asthmatic, so I use Singular. The combo of those keeps things working pretty well. I highly suggest a nasal spray in addition to a pill (Flonase, Nasonex, etc) as it has worked wonders for me.

I use the Claritin extended release tabs for daytime. They are absolutely the only thing that take my symptoms away. No side effects other than if you take them and then drink a lot of caffene. For some reason it gives me the jitters and sweats when I do that.

Personally I take Clarinex. I have just sneezing and itchy/runny nose and eyes also and it is my miracle drug. I don't experience any side effects myself.

What works best for me is a steroidal nasal spray. Beconase AQ or Nasonex are very good. They do not make you sleepy.
