The main cause is though we have lot of literates around, we actually lack educated people.
Millions can read their holy books & even write some but there are very few who actually understand a religion. It is the most misunderstood concept of all time.
If only, we can have more of educated people than just plain literates, not only Religious Fanaticism will reduce but many other evils will also be taken care of, after all.....be it LordRama/Krishna/allah/wahe guru/gautam buddha/christ ....none among them is holding school passing certificate

It's a combination of ignorance and exploiting the ignorance of others in order to further one's own personal agenda. This is demonstrated by the fact that many acts of religious fanaticism stem from a misinterpretation of texts or teachings of that faith, such that they come to signify something totally off the mark that would really only benefit a select group of people.

The rise of religious fanatacism can be attributed to the rise in modernity. As a nation, culture or people progress technologically, culturally and scientifically fundamental religious values tend to recede. As the technological prevelance increases in a country, so does the flow of infromation and the availability of ideas from outside sources. this creates a shift in values and an increase in diversity that also tends to reduce the influence of religion; as a response to this fundamental believers become more outspoken and sometimes violent. The more dramatic the increase in technology and advancement the more dramatic the reaction the rise in fundamentalism. Take europe for example.
The trend of increasing technology and receding religious participation can be observed readily in nearly all european countries, as they have modernized and acclimated to the developed world over time religion has slowly dropped off. However the change happened over a long period of time and there was little strife and conflict. Hower in the middle east which is largely un-modernized we are experience great conflict, struggle and the large scale expoting of terrorism.
Even in america this trend is observable. As our nation has become more advanced and powerful, and as immigrants and thinkers have changed they core ideas and values of our country, religious groups have become more outspoken and vocal in their opposition of new ideas such as abortion, stem cell research and even condom distribution. this then leadds to the more fanatical to take actions like killing abortion doctors or blowing up their offices or sometimes blowing up or burning churches that cater to differing religious sects.
hope this helps.

In a country there was communal unrest, A young man thought to give advice to ppl of peace and started preaching it.
After a while he was very famous and ppl liked his preaching.
At such meeting one day by mistake he stamp out a butterfly.
As the days passed he travelled all over the world and after some years he came back to the country where he started the preachings.
And he found that some ppl were wearing butterfly model on right shoulder and some on left.
So he asked them that what is about, they said that there was a great guru who gave salvation to a butterfly with his right leg by stamping.
And few said with left leg and no one remembers that he his the guru and his preachings.
I said this story here because..... I think You can Understand.
There is nothing to do with religion and teachings.
Egos are the main cause

There is a big difference between "religious pride love" and "religious fanaticism". Indians (I don't mean you but I am talking about others) have a tendency to confuse the two.
The only two religions that have religious fanatics are Islam and Christianity. Islam and Christianity both preach racial superiority, they both glorify war, they are both racist and aggressive barbarian religions. When Muslims kill, wound and rape in the name of their religion or when Christians feel the need to poison the minds of Hindus against their own religion on order to convert them, they prove to everyone that they are religions of hatred and fanatcism. I mean, just look at how they were spread in history.
Anyway, coming back to your question, the main cause behind the fact that Islam and Christianity are fanatical religions is the fact that they are both EVIL. Pure and simple. If mussies and chrissies are angry at what I have said, GOOD. I don't care about them. What I have said is the basic truth and as they saying goes, truth hurts.

All religions are basically multi-national economic organisations, such as coca- cola, microsoft etc. They depend on recruiting as many followers(consumers) as possible.
They pressurise politicians and govts to give them special treatment eg tax exemptions etc to maximise revenues to enable further recruitment. The only difference between them and the multinationals is their product, an ephemeral promise of Heaven or Hell----- at least with Coca Cola you get a drink

Narrow approach to linking with God. Minority groups always criticising and frightening people to keep them in their fold. They do not believe that God is one power and we may call him by any name. Different Gurus and religious sects set their own parameters and indulge in politics and communal hatred, wars using religion spread by them. All epics do not teach violence of any kind but their interpreters always use religion for spreading hatred against others. They do not follow religion in true sense. But only innocents r harmed by such fanatics and real culprits r always at bay.

Religious fanaticism is caused by a bunch of misled people who themselves are not aware of the beauty and depth of soul within you which is a part or 'image' of God, or the universal soul. Those who do not understand the "TRUTH", twist it , misinterpret and makes it fanatic, and let me tell you , it sells.
