Air is a pretty good electrical insulator so the less air- the better. But with the small air gap, the closer the contacts and the low voltage spark will be hard to see. Try it in a dark room.

Get a big coil (like a spark coil from a car)
Connect the battery to the coil so that current flows through the coil.
Then quickly disconnect the coil

Take a clean piece of steel wool and stick it on top of your 9 volt battery. Watch the sparks fly!

i'm undecided approximately making a spark, yet you may actually commence a fireplace utilising a 9 volt battery and metallic wool. touch the metallic wool to the two posts on the battery and it will warmth up and start to glow. then you definately can touch the metallic wool to three style of kindling. i think of this is style of comparable theory as how an electric powered burner works on a range.

Short out the positive and negative terminals. connect a wire to the negative terminal then connect a different wire to the positive then touch the two wires together. Works the same way as hooking up jumper cables to a car and touching the other side of the jumpers together.

I don't know how lame this is, but I was watching The Inferno 3 and they had to start a fire and they took steel wool (quite a bit of it, because a small chunk doesn't seem to work) to start their fire. Supposedly it will even work if both items are wet.

get a small piece of steel wool and touch it to the two contacts. I have heard this is a good way to start a fire with some tinder, if you're in a "survival" bind, and have both of those items.
