I just watched another war movie (Days of Glory) in which one infantryman turns around to talk to another one, and in doing so inadvertently points his rifle at him. I've seen this in TV shows too. This has to be a no-no in real life right?

Absolutely. Anyone who's ever handled a weapon should know this.

Yes, it is a serious violation. First time will likely get you a serious cussing. Second time could get you a physical reminder. Third time and you'll likely be separated from your weapon which is never a good thing in a combat zone.

Some times and in some places all three are delved for the first offense.

Third World Armies are often in violation of this simple and respectful rule. And they could get shot over it.

In the Army, if you're carrying a pistol, it's holstered.

If you're carrying your rifle, it's slung around the shoulder, muzzle pointing straight up.

If you ever point a firearm at a fellow soldier, expect to get beat up. It's a serious safety violation that is NOT taken lightly.

Big time. I've seen people punished for making this mistake. Safety is a major concern during any kind of military training.

This is a definite "no go" as is called 'flagging'. I know I went through hours of training for muzzle awareness and keeping my trigger finger outside of the trigger guard. Pretty soon, it becomes second nature.

If you are carrying a gun around like a suitcase, your NCO is a dumb-@$$. If you play John Wayne in combat your @$$ is grass.

Its called "crossing'...when you turn and cross another with the business end of your weapon......also termed "sweeping"..usually only done once because the "Crossed"person tends to react violently..as in "hey dumb-a*s,if you point that thing at me again Ill kick your a*s to the moon"....
