I have seen alot of 'christian answers' but not much Islamically. Well, Iblis is NOT an angel, he is a jinn as the question says, so READ the question people before u answer it. Anyways, he has his helpers (minions) just as in the christian version. But there was no war in heaven....Iblis simply was going to be thrown in the hellfire and asked for the chance to mis-lead people. GOD granted him that chance till the last day. But not only does he misled, WE mislead ourselves by following our 'nafs' or low desires. He is Not powerful, but he knows mankind better than anyone except GOD as he was there when Adam (as) was created. He is also patient...i hope this is a basic explanation, Allah (swt) knows best. There is a whole kingdom of the pesky devils. So when people say "Satan is bothering me" or such, its actually one of his minions doing the hassling. The christian healing minister and evangelist Smith Wigglesworth once had an open vision where he encountered Satan himself. "Oh, Its you" Smith said, and went back to sleep.
According to christian belief (a reference in Revelation 12 I think) 1/3 of the angels rebelled with Satan. There are probably millions of them.

Because he is a false accuser, a slanderer, a thief & a murderer since the beginning. And he is very tallented at what he does. Well the red dragon serpent's tail deceived 1/3 of the Godly Angels & they were cast out of heaven and are ungodly angels now.
But they also have offspring, the demons and there are a lot of those also. So, they have a number of false accusers, slanderers, liars, theives & murderers doing their thing. And then they tempt humans to do their dirty work for them because these spirits don't have bodies so can only manipulate by intimidation & fear & lies.

The answer is in the "Jewish" Torah. Everything in the Torah is still valid and both Books (Torah and Qu'ran) should be read together.
As it states in "Genesis" Lucifer was cast out of heaven, along with a literal army of Jinn (his angelic followers), to Earth. Lucifer/Satan was given domain over the earth for a specified time...usually referred to in the Qu'ran as "the appointed time"...to do what he wants with anyone (and everyone) he can deceive.
The implication is that Satan controls, or tries to control, all "worldly" things. He also made it his full time job to destroy as many Humans/People as possible...literally and spiritually (eternally)...because WE are the cause of his downfall AND God's MOST HATED creation in his eyes.
His favorite tools for his "job" (the destruction of the human race) are Government, Money, Information Control, "Education" (Indoctrination) and much of "Organized Religion"....AND his army of deceivers/Jinn.
His favorite form of entertainment is stirring up trouble with lies that make people kill each other. It's kind of like a "two for one deal" for him he gets to laugh at the gullible humans go off with motives created by, or manipulated by, him (greed, jealousy, envy, arrogance etc,.) to slaughter each other.
America seems to be his most successful project to date although there has been plenty of massive slaughter in past societies too. But Americans also find deep pleasure in slaughter of all forms. They not only slaughter each other everyday in every imaginable way (providing endless episodes of "Law and Order" and "CSI") but they have really perfected the state (CITIZEN PAID FOR) sponsored Army...able to slaughter on a massive scale virtually anywhere. Another two for one deal...Satan forces everyone into abject poverty paying for his killing machine causing more stress and domestic slaughter.
Another implication is that in a way it really is "either your with us or your with the enemy" in this world and the only defense is to remain a vigilant servant of THE CREATOR OF EVERYTHING (even puny little Lucifer) GOD.

Because he is the father of lies, You ask why is he so powerful, God gives him an alotted time frame, But many fails to see that God is more powerful, Read Revelation Chapter 20:2 God bounds satan for 1000 yrs during the milliennium.

Because if 1.6 billion muslims can be misguided by Islam, which is a heretical religion, satan can misguide a few billion more through various cults, sects, humanism, modernism, communism, atheism etc.
Only the Church of Jesus Christ which he established in 33 a.d. has true power. The gates of hell will not prevail against it.
Why? because of Love The Bible says that of faith, hope and love, the most important is love. (1 Cor 13:13)
Islam conquers through the sword Christ through love.

iblis/satan what ever you want to call it is a mythical being look at the old testament satan just did what god told him to do the christians elevated him to some sort of god with the power to trick people
