Rent the cartoon movie All Dogs go to Heaven then after you watch it with her, explain to her that your dog is with Charlie now so he wont be around anymore. Then have her write a letter to your dog (or draw a picture) or something to say goodbye, since she didnt get to and she could probably use the closure. Tie the letter to a balloon and let her let it go up to the sky. It will be something she will be a memorable experience for her. Then when shes older she'll understand what happend a little better when you tell her.
Thats the easiest way i could think of.

Be honest. Tell her that the dog is very sick, and that the vet can't do anything to make it better. You are taking him to the vet so that it won't be hurting anymore. You all love the dog, but you had to do the responsible thing and let him go. Do not tell her that the dog has been put to sleep, because she might understand that less. The vet will probably also be able to help you, because they have (sadly) a lot of experience with that sort of thing.

Tell her the truth, Please do not take this as a stereotype. Please read all before rateing me down,
When we were younger,
We had a pet dog that knew where she lived and for years she would jump the fence and go back to the front door.
Well one year the aisin restraunts were showing up, the aisin's would be seen walking the alley's and people always wandered why they would be walking around after dark.
One night our chihuahua/poodle mixed dog (the nicest dog ever) ended up missing.
We asked our parents where she was and they said she just ran away. Well in the next few weeks we were riding our bikes behind the restraurants and there were skinned animals hanging by their tails behind the establishments.
Even to this day our parents tell us they don't know what happened to her.
If they put her down, I do believe they would have told us.

Why are you putting him down? I am assuming that it's because he's ill? Tell her the truth...all living things live and die. Make it easier by explaining the whole situation to her and tell her that the dog is suffering and that it's more humane to put him down that to let him suffer. You can also explain that uenthenasia is the best because the dog will no longer suffer and the dog will go to heaven where he will be well and god will look after him.
I still remember the lies my parents told me when we had to have an animal put down...not the best experience in the world. Be honest and answer any questions she might have. GOOD LUCK!

It will need to probably need to be repeated but I'm sure there is a good reason for him being put to sleep. Just explain that the dog is very old and was sick and the GOOD doctor gave him a shot to let hm go to sleep forever, He will not wake up but now he is much happier.
Tell her That you miss him to but the Doctor did it because he loves dogs and it was OK and the best thing.
And I am sorry for you and your mother tell your mother for me that I am happy she is taking care of your dog in the best way and I will think of all of you

Its really hard to deal with things like this. but i think the best thing to say is that his body was broken, and the vets couldnt fix him. When kids are so young they may not understand that the dog won't come back. So if you say that he passed away, then that might give her the clue he might come back. she may be very sad, so you could help her to think of the good times she had with him. Good luck!

Tell her there was a recall on all dogs produced over the age of four and that the stork had to fly all the way back and pick it up and it was a huge ordeal what with all the paperwork and time spent on the phone with customer service and then ultimately the impending multi-class action lawsuit against U.S. Dog Manufacturers and then "oh look over there a newer softer quieter puppy yayyyyyyy"

Hard situation to be in. I have had it done to me all my life. It's hard to deal with at such a young age. One of my friends who is 15 had to put his dog that he had for 11 years to sleep about a month ago and it was not an easy task for him. I wouldn't wanna lie to her and tell her it ran away or got ran over, it would seem okay at the time, but if she ever found out the truth she would be crushed that you lied to her even though you thought it was the right thing. I would tell her the truth, even though its going to be hard.

If you believe in an afterlife, tell her your doggie enjoyed a long life with you and loves you all, but now God wants him to go to heaven, and the vet will help him get there. I'm not very religious, but I feel strongly you shouldn't lie about it, just put it in the nicest terms possible.

Tell her that your dog wasn't feeling good and had to go to the dog hospital. Then while there it saw these beautiful golden stairs that lead to God and now your dog is not feeling pain anymore and is happy.
Little kids are so easy, and they believe a lot of stuff so when she gets older tell her the truth.
