It is a defense of Jesus Christ as God. Forget calling Jesus Christ a phrophet. Forget saying Jesus Christ is a created Son of God. Forget saying Jesus Christ is an angel. John is implying that Jesus Christ is God, was God and will always be God. John is implying that Jesus Christ is God who was spoken of in the Old Testament. John is implying that Jesus Christ is the creator and eternal God.
This is not just my opinion...it is Johns words.

Christ is the Word of God—He created all things and was made flesh—John baptizes Jesus and testifies he is the Lamb of God—John, Andrew, Simon, Philip, and Nathanael believe in Christ and follow him.
