The answer depends upon where you're going and from which airport. Leave plenty of time. It's better to "hurry up and wait".
Have a safe trip.

As the others have said, it really depends on the size of the airport, the time of day, and whether the flight is international or domestic. The check in process can also take time if you are checking in luggage. Every airport is different. Some have you take your luggage to be inspected, and others take it and have it inspected on its way to the plane. Also, the more carry-on items you have in your bag, the longer it takes to get through security. Follow TSA's guidlines as to what you can and can not take, and call the airline to find out the recommended time for check in. Standard is 2 hours ahead of time for domestic flights and 3 hours for international, but this can vary some.

While it depends on the airport, the general consensus is that you should:
Arrive 1 hour ahead of time for a domestic flight, and
Arrive 2 hours ahead of time for an international flight.
These times allow you to check in, go through security, and go through customs (if necessary). It is also important to know that some airlines do NOT let you board your plane 15-30 minutes before the departure time, so you want to get to the departure gate as soon as possible.
I took 15 flights in the month of March, and made every single one in time using these guidelines.

I am a flight attendant with a major airline and I do this all the time. It can take an hour or 5 minutes. It depends on many factors....the time of day, people ahead of you, domestic or international flights, what you have in your bags, and security itself. I suggest you always give yourself plenty of time.
Domestically, at least an hour and a half before your flight and Internationally at least 2 hours. You'd rather be there sitting and waiting by your gate than stressed trying to make it on time in the security line. There should be more than one security line so check to see which is the shortest line.
Tip 1: Whatever you may doubt to take on board with you pack it in your large suitcase. This is your larger piece of luggage you will be checking in and later picking up at baggage claim at your destination. (Ex. shampoo, conditioner, make-up, lotions, gels, etc. anything larger than 3oz. in a Ziploc Bag bag as well to avoid spillage in your bag.) If you don't want to check a bag in then make sure you have a ziploc bag with all your lotions, creams, shampoo, toothpaste, etc in a small 3oz bottle or tube.
Tip 2: when you are approaching your turn at the security line make-sure you take off anything metal or that may beep. (Ex. belt buckle, ipod, cell phone, shoes, etc.) If you are carrying a laptop or DVD have it out of it's carry case and ready in a bin. Be ready when it's your turn and try passing as quickly and beepless as possible. This will make a difference. If you happen to have anything on you or in your bag security will take you aside and check you and your stuff. This will make it a much longer process.
Tip 3: Call the airline you will be flying and they should provide all the rules and regulations. Just follow them the best you can. You should have no problems.
Tip 4: Remember to always pack some munchies in case you get hungry throughout your journey. Some flights will NOT feed you. You can also buy yourself food while you wait to get onboard. Especially liquids (Ex. water, sodas) After you have gone through security you can carry these on to the plane.
I wish you a fun journey and safe flying!!! JRodi777

After checking in for tickets and waiting at an average time of day for security...total time from arrival at airport to gate is about 30-40 minutes.

It really depends upon the time of day, what airport you are flying at, etc.... I have gone through security in ten minutes up to 2 hours.

After checking in, always make sure you proceed to the security check for the departures no later than 1 hour before your flight.
I always check in 2 hours before the plane leaves, and make my way through security 1 hour 30 mins before.
If it is very busy and you're worried you will be last at the gate, there are usually staff on hand to fasttrack people through whose flights are waiting.

That really depends on the time of day, what day of the week it is and if its a holiday or a travel day. It also depends on how busy the airport is (on a regular basis) The busiest airports (like LAX or JFK) usually have longer lines.

Depends on the time of day, size of the airport, and whether you're taking an international flight or not. You should call the airline and ask what their recommended arrival time is.
