Without going into too much detail, and sounding like a complete loon..... periodically (over the last few years) i have seasons where i have trouble sleeping due to some wickedly bad nightmares. (its not the cause entirely of why i cant sleep, but a contributing factor). I feel like i'm four as shouldnt grown people NOT get them?
I know that they most likely have something to do with unresolved issues that i need to deal with, and i've tried.
But, i still get them from time to time.
They arent nonsensical dreams, .... but, how do i say this properly? Fragmented pieces of ........ ?things past and just crazy and plain horrible. (i'm not explaining it right) but..... how do i stop having them? i've had 2 this week, and i'm tired of it.

See a counselor; you are something going on within your life that you are struggling with or have been subjected to a traumatic experience. I've been where you are! The answers lie within yourself and a counselor will assist you in finding them. Good luck!

Nightmares are normal, especially if you're going through a rough time while your awake. It's not a kid thing or something we grow out of. Different things you can try, are paying attention to what you're thinking of while you're awake. Our dreams are created from all the information that passes through our mind in the day, while you sleep, the logical part of your brain sleeps too, but the information storage doesn't, hence the creation of the interest clips we get to view while we snooze, that are sometimes completely illogical. After having a nightmare, it will do good to get out of the area where you were sleeping and remind yourself that it was only a dream. Tomorrow, when it's on your mind, don't dwell on it. Just remind yourself that it was just a dream and nothing real, so it's nothing to worry about. Nightmares go away when we don't feed them. Hope I've helped!

Right now the dreams are on your mind, you always subconsciously think about them and they come in your sleep (obviously lol) Try totally clearing your mind before you go to sleep. Relax, read a book, or take a long bath. Whatever you really like to do. Sometimes added stress in your day can also trigger these. I don't know about you, but sometimes I can actually think in my dreams. Try twisting them up when you have them, make things turn out for the better. Sometimes when I wake up and try to go back to sleep I slip right into the same horrible dream. That is what I learned to do when I have them. You can think of other "endings" or what not while you are sort of awake and sometimes you can actually apply them in your dream. Take care and good luck. Hopefully I was some help without sounding too crazy lol.

Unfortunately you cant just stop having dreams or nightmares or else you wouldn't be sane..Everyone has them, if they are so bad that you are not sleeping you probably go see a therapist(not being rude), he or she probably could help you work out what is causing this nightmares and maybe prevent you from having horrible ones..
You might end of needing to take some kind of sleep aid medicine, but you will never know till you get checked out.
Good luck

I can relate to nightmares and how bad they can be. I have post traumatic stress disorder from combat experiences and from surviving Hurricane Andrew among other things. There were times when I didn't want to go to sleep because of the nightmares, because I know what they're like.

My psychiatrist and I both take a drug called Cyproheptadine, which few doctors or patients have heard of. But since taking the drug, my nightmares have been reduced considerably and now I don't have them much anymore. But they were frequent invaders in my night. Ask your Primary Care doctor as well and see if he'll let you try it.

Without going into all that detail, I would recommend Rock Rose a Bach Flower Essence for you. Also a good Essential oil for aromatherapy (check out some good sites for that) so that your stress is reduced.

Sleep upside down or side ways.
Downside up will cause nightmares even on babies.
