They are

2007-06-14 06:06:46 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 4 2

"They are" (for people, and for plural objects)
or
"You all", as in when talking to more than one person.

Examples:
Ellos estan en mi casa - They are in my house
Estan tristes - They are sad
Que estan haciendo? - What are you all doing?

It comes from the word 'estar' (to be), and is used for things that are temporary. Say for example, you wouldn't use it with your gender or where you were born, because that doesn't change and is always the same. You'd use 'estar' for emotions and such. There's another word for 'to be', used another way, but let's not get into that...

Hope that was helpful.

Technically están, it means "they are" or even "you are" (you being 2nd person plural formal ustedes). It refers to location or temporary state of being.

"Están" = "They are".

Do not confuse it with "son" that also means "they are".

That's more complicated to explain. Tough subject.
