They've been married for four years? I bet they have a toaster. And will probably get another one.

Here are some novel ideas. Buy them a really good bottle of wine or Champagne - Spend at least fifty dollars on it. Get them a set of matching glasses to go with it - and maybe some strawberries to enjoy in their new house.

Buy them a tree for their yard. Consult them first, but you can get a lovely small Maple, Oak etc. Arrange to have the guests plant it in their yard - with maybe a time capsule under it with pictures of the evening and some small trinket from each person. Read Joyce Kilmer's poem "I think that I shall never see, a poem as lovely as a tree" and say a few words about how you hope that as the tree grows, so will the love, joy and prosperity of the family growing in it's shade. Even without the tree, the time capsule is a nice idea. They can plan on digging it up in 20 years. :)

Collect pictures from friends and make them a memory book - pictures from parties you've all attended together, special moments, wedding photos. Only fill it part way - leave the rest of the space open for them to add new memories.

Take a traditional housewarming basket (if you happen to live in a celtic country) Put in a bottle of Mead (honey wine - so their first memory in the new house will be "Sweet in their mouths") Some candles - so there will never be darkness in the house - a small dish with some coins in it - so there will always be prosperity - a new broom - to sweep away the past and give them a clean start some food so they won't go hungry (this can be some nice bread and good cheese or a pie) Fill in with chocolates or flowers and take it over. Make sure you put in a nice note explaining why everything is in the basket and that it's full of your wishes for the future for them!

Housewarming Gifts For Couples

If this is their first house (as opposed to an apartment or condo) then you might consider items that they've never owned before like rakes, shovels, water hose, lawn bags, etc. If it is just a new house then I agree with other posters that you should give them something consumable like wine or chocolate or maybe a gift card.

The best housewarming gift I got believe it or not, was a wicker basket filled with individual stuff they purchased for us, like, furniture polish, window cleaner, carpet cleaner, laundry soap, toilet bowl cleaner, etc. You get the idea. We thought it was clever and very useful.

Unless you know exactly what they need, giving them a gift card to a home improvement store is really nice for all those unseen things they will need.
Peace.

They probably already have most practical things they would need, so I would suggest something more decorative. If they have a formal dinnerware cabinet, perhaps a "display" plate, a centerpiece for their dining table, or a piece of crystal (not one of those crystal dragons or unicorns, though...those are gaudy).

how about a basket, with household products in it. You can make one yourself and it will look like you put somethought into it rather than just bought a gift. You could put a frame in it, some candles...use your imagination!

nice picture frames, or photo albums for them to fill up. or a gift card if you don't know what they like or need. (people usually bring plants to houswarming parties also)

A blender, microwave, fine wine, something either practical, or consumable so that they don't have to worry about where to place everything.
