I've known him 4 or 5 years and he is a good friend of mine, although we've only met in person once. He will have an engagement ceremony in August and the wedding will be in November.

I would like to get a gift to send to him, but I'm not sure what is appropriate. I can't spend a lot, but I want it to be something nice, maybe something religious, if that is appropriate, because he has taught me much about Hinduism (I am a convert to Hinduism).

Is there a traditional type of gift for Hindu marriages?

Thanks!

At most times, in Indian weddings, crockery, household items are generally gifted but if you are familiar with Indian way of clothing(Indian clothes etc.) then you could gift it as well. I myself would prefer clothing because the wedding couple at most times really like clothes. But even if you aren't familiar with Indian clothes, then you can go to an Indian shop and ask them there that you want to buy a gift for an Indian wedding and you prefer clothes(or anything else that pleases you) and they'll show you.
BTW Have fun at the wedding!

Don't know what is traditional, but some really fine incense, together with an artistic incense holder, would be really nice. At the "Ten Thousand Villages" stores, there are little incense kits that have a real gifty look, in a nice box and everything. Any nice household item, such as a bowl or vase for flowers, perhaps a pretty tray, would be appropriate for a wedding in any culture. I would concentrate on the hand-made, artful things, and leave the mass-produced alone.

I have only seen gifts given to the groom by the father of the bride. I would think something for the new home.

Money or some practical present that she'll use. Indians always prefer money though. I've went to a couple of Hindu weddings. I've never seen anyone give religious presents.

Umm...it doesn't matter, just give them something you would give anyone on their wedding day. Something practical maybe or a gift card. I'm sure they are registered somewhere.

Gift card. That knows no religious boundaries and is always appreciated.
