If a hundred children were raised in a house completely isolated from the world (lived in the boonies, no phone, tv, internet, or visitors) and had no direct contact or knowledge of their caretakers (say they were left meals in an otherwise closed off room at the same times every day), would any come to believe in a God?

People like pat answers and people have vivid imaginations. If there is a question we can't answer, we'll make up one, and we like to anthropomorphize. So, there's a good chance they would just make up a god of sorts. You see similar things happening with the so-called cargo religions.

I'll presume that it is just Ur Rebellious Youth trying here to Prove the Scriptures Wrong (although many have in Trolling asked it before U), not just a "Dark Heart" & so I give this Scripture from Jeremiah 31: 33-36;
33 "But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD. I will place my law within them, and write it upon their hearts; I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
34 No longer will they have need to teach their friends and kinsmen how to know the LORD. All, from least to greatest, shall know me, says the LORD, for I will forgive their evildoing and remember their sin no more.
35 Thus says the LORD, He who gives the sun to light the day, moon and stars to light the night; Who stirs up the sea till its waves roar, whose name is LORD of hosts:
36 If ever these natural laws give way in spite of me, says the LORD, Then shall the race of Israel cease as a nation before me forever."

So, NO ONE can use the "Excuse", "I had no idea." before the Judgment Throne of God!!! John

Yes,it is the conscience that is innate and universal.That is why children know when they misbehave even before they are taught morals.It is why adults with no religious background see the need for some system of moral standards in society.I'm not even touching on the subject of the spirit or soul.

They probbably would, lets say a earthquake happend? THey didn't know it was plates shifting in the ground, they might think a giant took a step in a far off land, its things like that which leads to mythology and gods..

We don't really need them anymore but its been around for so long people are having trouble letting go.

Lookup 'Cargo Cult'.

But it's not quite an instinct, it's a genetic predisposition, and a fading one at that, many people have variant genetics involved so are weakly disposed to belief.

If there was some occurance that they couldn't otherwise explain. It's commonly believed that that's how religion started. It would probably happen eventually.
