After two seasons of track this year, I needed to take a break because I was beginning to get shin splints. At the same time, I decided I was allowed to celebrate a little for staying healthy for so long. Since the spring season ended I have already run at all and I have completely lost my good eating habits. Now, I need to start running again but I nervous that I won't be able to run nearly at my capacity a month ago. any suggestions on how to get back in shape?

Just get back. You can start running easy so you do not become injured. Take your time and get your body used to running. Run easy for 2 to 3 miles, 3 days per week. After 2 weeks you should be able to increase your miles and days. After 1 month you can begin to do some hard running. Mix in some tempo runs and run 5 to 6 days per week. After 2 months you should be able to handle work outs and be back to your old self.

GET STARTED !!

It's easier to get back to running than to start for the first time. Just take your time and don't injure yourself.

Shin splints are caused by muscle imbalance. Calf strong, shin weak. The way to correct this is to strengthen the muscles at the front of the legs. Lie face down in bed with your toes hanging over the edge. Pull your toes upward against the resistance of the mattress. Try to work up to 3 or 4 sets of 5 – 10 reps each. Good Luck

If the tendon hurts then ease off a sprint. the belief is to start working and then slowly advance back to as your leg heals
