Do you lie to fit in, or to stand out from the crowd?

Most of the lying about myself is done by just stretching the truth a little bit. There are certain things that I can't lie about because anybody with a computer can check up on some of the basic things such as my professional qualifications.

I said I was a member of the "Washington Irving Literary Society" when I was in prep school. A lot of people thought that was an organization for English literature scholarship when it was actually an intramural sports team.

I said that I was a recipient of a "Robert S. Macnamara Work-Study Fellowship" when I was in graduate school. For those who are not Vietnam-era veterans, they might think it was a great academic honor. In actuality, it was what some of us referred to as receiving GI Bill Educational Benefits.

I had a ski jacket with patches from all of the major ski areas in New England which I purchased when I was there. In actuality, I visited those ski areas in the summer time, not during ski season. If asked if I actually purchased them, I could truthfully said that I did purchase them at the ski area, that I did not have a friend buy them for me, etc. People got the wrong impression that I actually skied there, when, in actuality, I only skied ski areas in Pennsylvania.

I could tell friends that I had been to some of the best country clubs in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, area, and they might think I was a golfer. In actuality, I was a dinner guest at those golf clubs. I only played at the course my dad was a member of. No, he was not a member of Oakmont.

I don't lie to fit in or to stand out. When you lie, you have to remember who you told what in order to keep your stories straight, and in the end, you're usually found out. People should be able to accept themselves for their own individual uniqueness and not have to lie about what they've done, where they've been, who they know. We are all unique, worthwhile individuals who have a variety of experiences. Admittedly, some are more interesting than others, but that's true of everything in this world.

depends on the situation...or the person I am lying to actually. I would say I don't do this and no one should because it's wrong...but that in itself would be a lie. Everyone at one time or another does this....the majority of people anyway.
