If he is a chihuahua then no. It is normal. Some never close and stay rather large. If he is not a chi, then it's abnormal.

Chihuahua's are the only dogs that should have the molera. Some are a little bigger than other. Some close some never do. If it's very large you may want to talk to your vet about it.

The Chihuahua's molera(a.k.a. fontanel) is considered a breed characteristic and not a defect. Most Chihuahuas (80 percent to 90 percent) have a molera — a soft spot on the top of their head similar to a human baby's soft spot. But unlike babies, most Chihuahuas don't outgrow it. Although it usually shrinks as the dog matures and ends up between nickel- and dime-sized, Pepe's molera won't be a problem as long as you're gentle when petting or handling his head.

In rare cases, the molera remains quite large and can be a sign of a serious problem called hydrocephalus (see the next section). But don't borrow trouble. Hydrocephalus has several other signs besides a larger-than-usual molera.

Yes, if it is extremely large the dog probably has hydrocephalus(water on the brain). I had a wonderful sweet hydrocephalus baby named Honeybunch. She lived almost 4 years altho the vets advised putting her down when she was a tiny baby. Honey's condition was controlled for many years with meds, but they just quit working at the end. Has the vet checked out the molera? If it is hydrocephalus, you will be in for a lot of heartache, but a lot of love from a special little dog. I have known several "moms" to these special little dogs over the past few years. Most of our babies have now gone on to the Rainbow Bridge. Would I take another of these special little dogs? Absolutely!

Enigma, you can email me thru my profile if you need to talk to someone with this condition. It does sound like hydrocephalus.

Moleras usually close by maturity, but if it remains open, it does increase risk of injury. Not sure if that consists of a ''problem'', but extra care is needed.
