The book The Thorn Birds was written by Colleen McCullough who is Australian. It is about the Cleary family and 60 years of their family history.

The Thorn Birds was made into a mini series in the early 1980's starring Richard Chamberlain, Rachel Ward, and Christoper Plummer. This movie is a definite watch if you have the time.
