I don't care about the cost, I just want to know what is a good reliable brand that's able to last long and works very well. I purchased a panasonic VCD/DVD player based on advice from friends/colleagues. A few also mentioned pioneer. I know i've already bought it but i just want to know more. Can anyone with experience please recommend what is a good brand. Thanks.

Im sure in every country, there are companies that flout/defy the law These companies reverse engineer something that already exist and then re design and incorporate it into their products. In the end, all we get are inferior products that don't perform well or last long.

At least the Panasonic, and Pioneer have the proper lisencing to build these units. Toshiba (they own the patent for the DVD and copyright to the DVD logo) has filed suit against 17 different companies for infringement upon their patent and copyrights. Memorex, and Daewoo are 2 that come to mind. I own a Toshiba player, a Hitachi DVD-RAM recorder, and a Pioneer player. I have had great service out of each of these. Unfortunately Hitachi pulled out of the DVD market just after I got mine. The prices dropped like a rock and Hitachi just decided to stop doing DVD to keep from posting a loss trying keep up with the cheaper competition.

It turns out Toshiba says in their complaint to the US district court in CA, that the unlicensed units have put such a strain on the market, it has damaged the DVD player market. If they win, the unsold players would have to be destroyed, and fines paid by the offenders. Royalties would have to be paid by these companies to continue their production. I personally hope they (Toshiba) win their suit. It's about time these "fly by night" companies learn they cannot reverse engineer a product and just make one of their own, with impunity, and without any regard for the laws of the USA, and without observing the rights of the patent holder. If they win, there might just be a chance for some of the reputable name brands to build a good unit, that will last longer than the warranty period, instead of being just a disposable something else to fill up our landfills.

I like Panasonic and Pioneer. Denon is good too. Most of the big name brands will be good. Denon has great electronics inside. They use excellent Digital to analog converter chips and video and audio processor circuitry. Denon actually uses or at least has used pioneer mechanicals(also known as transport mechanisms) in their players. McIntosh audio a very high end manufacturer of audio components (not to be confused with Apple) has also used Pioneer transport mechanisms in their cd and dvd players. I have 2 Panasonic players, one is 7 years old. I still use it on my old tv it works great. The movement of the tray is nice, quiet and smooth. My Toshiba is not as nice it seems a bit clunky.
