Hi Hannah,
Well, I'd say just take her to the vet. Take it from someone who lost a dog due to thinking "it wasn't serious" when the little first little symptoms showed up... Pay attention to those little things, maybe she has a cyst on her stomach that is harmless...but the possibility is there for alot of things based on what you describe. Thats what the doc's went to school for!
(Did she ever like being picked up? Because that is the other side of the coin, dogs have personal preferences just like people...but still take her to the vet.)

Questions first? Has she always done this or is this something new? IF it is long term, she may have been dropped as a puppy and has anxiety issues at being held in the air.
If this is something new, then she needs to go to the vet as she may have a cracked or broken rib or leg. Small dogs get stepped on and this can happen. She may have been inadvertly kicked as well.

She is probably just scared. Try to read some books on dog behavior like the Dog Whisperer, among others, they are very helpful! In the meantime, just approach her little by little and very quietly. Don't stare at her, let her approach you. Use cookies or her favorite treat to help make it a positive experience.

Call the vet. She might have an injury or she just might not like being picked up. Maybe Ur picking her up wrong. But I'm betting that she has an injury.

how do you pick her up? if like a child, under the arm-pits, yes it can hurt them a little. Try sliding your left hand under her belly from between her back legs, place your left hand under her ribcage, put your right hand under her chest right between the front legs. when you lift her up, keep her touching your body until she's at chest level. that's the exact way I HAVE to pick up my deer-leg/head chihuahua. if he's picked up any other way he screams like I'm killing his best friend. I agree with the others, if this doesn't help, try calling your Vet for some advice

It sounds to me like she needs a vet as soon as possible. They do not cry for no reason. She is hurt. Good luck.

Sounds to me like she's in pain. You should take her to the vet and have her checked out. Better to be safe than sorry.
Good luck.

If this never happened before, she may be hurt or sick. Take her to the vet. If she tries to bite you, I would definitely say she is hurt.
