dont use a regular cup you would use on yourself. give him a sippy cup (sold at walmart for as cheap as $1.00). Can he drink from a straw? if so they have an insulated sippy cup with a straw (spill proof) at walmart for like $4.00 if i remembered that right. I use it on my almost 2 year old who is still on her bottle. good luck.

My kids had sippy cups/ beakers until they were nearly three (more for my convenience than their lack of ability), but they used to finish off my tea sometimes in the bottom of the cup from when they were quite young (8-10 months), so they got the idea.
If you put just a little in the cup, there isn't much to spill and can be drunk in one mouthful. That way the child will gain confidence and you can easily keep refilling it with a bit more each time until they are satisfied, but they will have the practice of drinking from a cup.
Expect spills until they are at least 35! My husband still spills his drinks regularly!

Most day cares request that children can drink from a cup at 2 years old. Just get the disposable dixie cups to start with and only file them 1/4 to 1/2 full to get him used to it. He will spill and get it all over him for a while. Best to just let him drink from a cup in a non-carpeted area.

it takes time for a toddler to learn how to drink for a cup. Be patient try water if your child spills everywhere. Every child will learn at different paces.

When the child is ready encourage but don't make a fuss and take no notice of the other mothers some who would have you believe that their kid could translate Euclid from ancient Greek at the age of two and understand the calculations to E=MC squared at three

I think its pretty normal for a child to still do best with a sippy cup until theyre in their 3rd year. Keep giving him a cup, to learn to use it, but if you need him to be neat, give him a lid.

Hold and control the cup while he drinks until he gets the hang of it, and let him use the beaker himself while he's learning

practice makes perfect - at the end of the day if you don't let them use a cup for a while then let them have it back your back at square one, you let them have it ok it will be messy but they will get use to it
