No, as in most large cities, only a very small portion of Long Beach would be "Ghetto". Long beach is, for the most part, a very nice community with better than average schools, and public transportation system. All things considered it's not a bad place.

The city of Long Beach is a beautiful place but it is also very large and with very diverse populations, with any large city there are going to be ghetto areas.

Long Beach's "ghetto" is in the North of the city and between PCH and Anaheim near downtown. There is a large socio-economic Hispanic population in that area of the city that often has more crime. However, the crime rate in Long Beach has dropped considerably in the last 10 years.

My spouse and I visited in December and stayed aboard the Queen Mary (which could use some sprucing up.) We didn't think it was a ghetto area. There were some areas where a lot of new construction of what seemed to be semi-luxurious condos were being erected. There were some vacant lots that it appeared someone was doing something with, but we couldn't ascertain what. The bus service was good: clean and friendly drivers. There were at least a couple of luxe hotels. There were some good (and some pricy) restaurants. Yet overhearing a young guy talking on a cell phone, he indicated that he had just moved there because it was so much cheaper than other places in and around LA. We were glad to have visited, but wouldn't be in a rush to go back only because there are so many other SoCal locales we haven't visited yet. P.S. We're from NYC.

A vast majoity of Long Beach is ghetto. The areas along the immediate coast (Ocean Blvd.) and Belmont Shores is OK. Otherwise, Long Beach is a major gang and drug center.

Give "BA" to Katie or Lucky.

Just wanted to tell Paul M that, since this question was in the LA Forum, it would be the Long Beach in Southern California. If this were in the Portland or NYC forum, it would be a different Long Beach.

Long Beach, California has some really nice places. As with any other city it has some really yucky places. Depends on where you go.
