Pretty much have to wipe Vista by reformatting the hard drive and Re-install XP. This means you will have to wipe everything else, as well unfortunately. I am in the same boat as you. I hate Vista, but not enough to go through the hassle of bringing my computer back up from scratch. After Vista I have promised myself that my next computer will either run Linux or be a Mac

You can not "downgrade" your version of Windows (or most other softwares) They would need to format the hard drive and do a full install of Windows XP to get back to it. They probably do not want to do that (without your permission) because it would wipe everything on the hard drive - all you music, videos, data files, etc. The install is simple enough that you should be able to insert the XP CD, boot the computer and let it do the install. You shouldnot need their help to do it.

The best alternative is to reformat your PC
Manage to back-up your files first!
You'll cry out loud if you lost them
Use a XP CD to reformat your PC
Delete the whole Vista operating system (only OS partition)
Then install

The Vista Recovery disks, if not supplied, may be ON the hard drive, RTFM and make copies of them before you do anything else!!!
Then:
Buy XP Recovery disks from Lenovo. Do NOT use a generic XP disk, they don't have the drivers for your PC.

The only way you can "roll back" to XP is if it was already install on it and you upgraded to Vista which isn't your case...
The only way is Format, then install XP.
