I have 2 1/2 year old male DMH (domestic medium hair). Lately I've noticed some darkening of the fur around his chin and wonder if it is possible for colors and patterns to become added, deleted, or changed on a cat naturally (and spontaneously).

What is probably happening is that your cat is shedding for the summer. The under coat is probably darker than the upper which is making it appear that he is changing colors. My long haired cat is black tortoise shell and when she sheds for the summer she also appears darker and with shorter fur.

it is possible, but usually won't be a huge difference. some hair getting darker is pretty normal, though i would think it would happen at a little younger age. i wouldn't worry, those dark hairs will probably turn gray ten years from now.

An animal can change shades of what ever color he or she is but, a cat can not go from an orangish color to black as an eg.
