I don't want to discuss Theistic or Atheistic Evolution, but your original question of why we are so obsessed with creation vs. evolution...
Because if there is no God, then there is no Supreme Being to which we must give an account—no Judgment Day, no heaven or hell. If this is just a great cosmic accident, then there is no such thing as morality (there is no right or wrong, no good or evil). We should just live by the saying, “Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die.” Because when you die there is nothing and nothing mattered.
But if there is a God—well, that’s a different story.
Are we an accident or the image of God? Are we without purpose or have an eternal goal? Do we live like an animal or like a child of God? In the end, is it dust or eternity?
Personally, I can't understand why anyone would want to talk about anything else.

If it's evolution within the species, it's not a big thing. Science has proven that all things evolve.
If the evolution you are talking about is from monkey to man, then that is where the problem is. Even Darwin said that Man is unique, in that there is no other creature like him.
And it may be a certain amount of pride: Which would you rather say, "I'm a man, and my ancestors were created with a divine spark." or "I'm a man, and my ansestors were monkeys."?
Most of the cross-species evolution falls apart, because nobody has ever found the missing link. The bones are always all ape, or all man. There's never been a middle species.

Because that was the First Win for the Atheist Scientists.
The Scopes trial.
They like beating a drum.
Here's the thing with science, teaching bad or wrong science is better than teaching no science at all.
I mean you teach 2 billion people for 50 years Pluto IS a planet and then you decide it isn't, hey, it's cool. They learned science, just they now have to re-learn it.
Atheists and Scientist WANT THE RIGHT to teach WRONGLY because "they are neat and cooler than the religious"
There is a STRONG possiblity that ONE DAY science will say CONCLUSIVELY we did not evolve from Apes.
They are already swinging in that direction.
They are playing with the Family Trees and some are moving NEADERTHAL way away from SAPIENS, while others want them to cross paths and interbreed (Clan of the Cave Bear mentality).

Also, be aware that the very title of your “Evolution VS. Creationism” is a misnomer and perhaps a misleading debate in and of itself for the following reasons:
1) Evolution and Creationism are not necessarily mutually exclusive. This forum seems set up in a “debate” format of opposites but there are many people who are evolutionists who still call themselves Christians and many who are Creationists who incorporate “room” for possible evolutionary theory.
2) Also, Evolution is a unified biological theory, whereas being a Christian is not a scientific theory, but a belief that gives meaning to the universe and our lives. Because of the theoretical nature of the subject of evolution and the pervasiveness of Christian origins thinking the two have clashed—but they are not really in the same field.
3) There is a growing “Theistic Evolutionist” movement and small pockets of Christian academics have resolved the two in their own minds.
4) Of course many have pointed out significant dangers to trying to reconcile the two views. For many leaving the door open at all to evolution is tantamount to saying you don’t believe in God. It’s easy to offend people on both sides of this debate.
5) In the fields of astronomy and physics there is a growing trend toward leaving “room” for the “prime mover” that would be God. This is a secular movement in large part and some physicists are drawn to Christianity to “explain the unexplainable universe” in some ways.

Why so much focus on the body? Because bodies exist. It makes sense to focus more on the existent than the non-existent, doesn't it?
josephwiess, technically humans are apes, so there obviously isn't going to be anything between 'all ape' and 'all human'. And if you want to base your beliefs on how proud they make you, go ahead. But you'd get the same results if you just flipped a coin, since your pride has nothing to do with truth.

You make a good point about focusing on the spirit, but the thing is, is that evolution claims we just happened, are just like animals, and have no spirit. So to even get someone talking about the spirit you have to weed through the evolution.

I don't care what you believe AS LONG AS it doesn't affect scientific advancement or the education of children. It is when a myth of creation is forced into our education system as a viable scientific theory that I have a problem. It is when people insist that they have the truth about everything and they hinder the advancement of the human race that I get upset.

Because their are people that wish to undermine science simply because it clashes with their narrow interpretation of the Bible.
Such people must be confronted because such a mentality allows an individual to be manipulated to do terrible things.

I suppose it's because it pains rational, educated people to see other folks believing in nonsense such as creationism.
