My mother in laws dog had that, the vet squeezes them! Yuk!!

the anal glands back in the day would be used when either marking terretory or like a skunk when provoked-
now days, the anal glands really serve no pupose. you can either take him in and have the vet extract them using a squeezing type motion, or better yet, if you don't want to bother, have them removed. many folks aren't aware they can be safetly removed.

Is there a cure? A friend of mine has a spaniel with the same problem and despite taking it to the vets often it still suffers poor thing.

Take him down to the vets and get them squeezed.
This happens to my staffy all the time.

You will need to expel them. A vet or groomer can show you how to do it. Be warned, it's not pleasant.
