Well your four year old is very smart
Dogs love fun and chasing around.
In excitement they can even bite.
when they see anybody or even a vehicle passing by they chase it for fun and If that thing Stops the fun is over a couple of barks or more and then the game is over.
When people are chased by dogs they keep running the more they run, the more are the chances that the dog will bite.

This is an instinctual prey drive that all hunting animals have.
They don't know it's a car..they think its a big deer or something.
This behavior is very dangerous and I recommend you break your dog of this habit. You can practice in a safe area, get in the car with a friend in the front seat and one friend holding a 12 ft leash attached to your dog's correction collar. Give the front seat friend a spray bottle with water. Start the car and drive slowly away, when the dog runs out of leash have the friend sharply correct him while the other friend sprays him in the face with water.
Both should shout NO!

I guess it is a being protective thing. I never had a dog that chased cars but had one that was smart enough to stop them. we lived on a dead end street so the cars would have to come back. She knew this. She would let the cars drive by and then go out in the middle of the street and wait, then bark at them when they came back.

Because the dog has an inferiority complex. They believe if they chase this huge monster out of their territory the owner will be proud of them. They are protectors you know. This is a trait that is easily trained out of them with consistent walks that last at least 45 min a time.

They are predators by nature so sometimes they instinctively chase anything moving at high speed. In their minds if it is trying to get away it must be something good to chase.

why does any dog like to chase something? because it's fun and it "runs" away from them, making it a great game for them. silly things just don't understand how badly they could get hurt doing it.
