Actually we do believe in speaking in tongues. But not like the pentacostals. When you speak in a tongue, you speak a different language, not babble. Someone needs to interpret it, it has a meaning. Brigham Young Spoke in tongues while saying a prayer, and Joseph Smith intrepret saying it he was speaking the adamic language of adam.

My brother learned Hungarian in 2 months to go on a mission. He speaks like a pro. Most college courses or high school language courses you would never be speaking anywhere near that well after years of study. That is the gift of tongues to me. You are taught by the Spirit to speak another language. In my understanding, the gift of tongues is given by the power of the priesthood for a specific purpose, like missionary work, and not just because you think it would be cool.

Mormon believe in tongues but they think that there has to be someone there who can understand what you are say.
example:
missionary is having a hard time with the new language. They don't seem to be getting it but when they are teaching someone all the sudden they are understand by the people he is teaching. That is speaking in tongues to a Mormon.

It's like revelation... they "believe" in it, but none of them has ever had it happen. They DO believe, however, that when Joseph Smith and Brigham Young did it, that it was real.

Of course, they'll tell you that for a missionary to learn to speak a language in 9 weeks at the Missionary Training Center is a manifestation of the Gift of Tongues. What they don't tell you, however, is that the missionaries don't even speak well enough to be understood, let alone to communicate coherent thoughts. They also don't tell you that even by the end of their 24-month missions, most still have a difficult-to-comprehend accent just as bad as the day they arrived at the MTC.

It's a little bit different than the Gift of Tongues we read about in the Bible.

I heard that they do. A former Mormon told me that some of them used to.

Maybe it is only a minority of them (just like in mainline Christianity).

Most people assume that the modern day practice of speaking in tongues is simply a form of self-hypnosis (based on Christians who have researched this movement scientifically among other Christians), and is not a true gift of the spirit.

In the early church, all the members where converts from something else, and that area of NY was a hotbed of charismatic type cults. Smith organized meetings with these people and many took on the characteristics of their former religious practices: speaking in 'tongues' and 'dancing with the spirit'. Many meetings held without Smith present resulted in people claiming visions of christ and prophesying.

Subsequently, when Smith saw HE was losing control of 'his people' a revelation of convenience occurred and he told everyone to knock it off - only HE could have revelations.

Now the current thought is to "Hold your Tongue" especially when Elder Packer or Oakes makes some dumbas$ statement

If you are talking about your definition of tongues, No they do not speak in tongues. Your defintion is people speaking in Jibberish that no one understands.
The Mormon defintion is that God inspires people to talk and understand each other even if they are speaking different languages.

I could never understand why people thought speaking in Jibberish was speaking in tongues.

Mormonism is a false religion, conceived by a charlatan. WHATEVER happens within the walls of a Mormon meeting, is not of God.
